A bivalve mollusc of the Veneridae family. Height 6.5cm, length 8cm, width 3.5cm. The shell surface varies from black-brown to white, with some individuals having two radiation zones. The inside is white. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms near the intertidal zone of inland bays from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also cultivated. The spawning season is summer. It is caught by clam hunters and is an important edible shellfish used in soups and tsukudani. The similar Korean clam, a thick-shelled species that lives on sandy bottoms in the open ocean, is slightly larger than the previous species. Its meat is edible, and its shells are used to make high-quality white stones for go stones, and Miyazaki was a famous production area. In recent years, Chinese clams have been imported from Korea for consumption.
