...Alongside the article style of the Spring and Autumn Annals, which records events, the written style of the Book of Documents, which records the words of kings, became the basic form of historical narrative in later generations. It is said that there were 100 chapters in Confucius' time, but after the burning of books by the Qin Dynasty, only 28 chapters were passed down from Fu Sheng of Jinan at the beginning of the Han Dynasty, and these were copied into the common characters (clerical script) of the Han Dynasty, so they are called the Modern Book of Documents. Later, during the reign of Emperor Wu, the Ancient Book of Documents, written in ancient characters and containing 16 more chapters than the 28 chapters of the modern text, was discovered in the walls of Confucius' former home....
