Potassium chromate

Potassium chromate

A potassium salt of chromate. It is obtained as yellow crystals by adding potassium carbonate to a hot solution of potassium dichromate until it becomes slightly alkaline, and then concentrating and cooling it. When heated to 675°C, it undergoes a hexagonal transformation and turns red, but when cooled, both the crystal system and color return to their original state. Its solubility in 100 grams of water is 58.0 g at 0°C and 75.6 g at 100°C, and the difference in solubility with temperature is relatively small, so it is difficult to purify by recrystallization from an aqueous solution. It is used in the manufacture of chromates, in the finishing of tanned leather, as a mordant, etc. It is used as an analytical reagent for heavy metal ions, and as an indicator in the Mohr titration of silver ions (an end-point detection method established in 1856 by Karl Friedrich Mohr (1806-1879) of Germany, where the end-point is the appearance of red silver chromate precipitate).
