Vaigach Island (English spelling)

Japanese: バイガチ[島]（英語表記）Ostrov Vaigach

An island in the northwest of the Russian Federation, on the Eurasian side of the Arctic Ocean. Together with Novaya Zemlya, it divides the Kara Sea (east) from the Barents Sea (west). It is separated from the continent by the Yugorsky Shar Strait, and from Novaya Zemlya by the Karskie Vorota Strait. It has an area of about 3,400 km2, with a maximum height of 170 m. The geology is made up of shale, sandstone, limestone, etc., and the surface is polar tundra, with marshes spreading in the lowlands. Many short rivers (20-30 km long) flow through it, and there are countless rapids and waterfalls.
