Also known as magnetostriction. The phenomenon in which the external shape of a ferromagnetic material changes when it is magnetized, or this deformation. The rate of distortion due to deformation is very small, about 10 ^-5 to 10 ^-6 . This is because the energy of the interactions between the spins that create the magnetic moment is a function of the distance between the spins, so when ferromagnetism occurs, the crystal lattice distorts so that the sum of this and the elastic energy is minimized. In this way, the magnetic domains are distorted in the direction of the spontaneous magnetization by about 10 ^-5 to 10 ^-6 . Because magnetostriction is a phenomenon in which both magnetic and mechanical forces are combined, it can be used to convert forces into each other.
