A bivalve mollusk of the Mytilidae family (illustration). The shell is egg-triangular and narrows towards the apex. It is 9 cm long, 5 cm high, and bulges 3.5 cm. It is thin and blue-black, but the ventral side is brown and shiny. It attaches to rocks and other objects by extending its byssus from the gaps on the ventral sides of its shells. The inner surface is bluish-white. Its small legs extend their byssus and move by attaching them to local objects. They feed on plankton and suspended organic matter. The spawning season in Japan runs from December to around April of the following year, with one parent oyster releasing around 12 million eggs.
