…The history of silk weaving in the Sichuan region is extremely long, as evidenced by the image of a silkworm found on the handle of a bronze spear from the Western Zhou period unearthed in Chengdu in 1975, as well as the image of a mulberry harvesting plant cast on a bronze urn from the Warring States period unearthed in Chengdu in 1965. Supported by this tradition, during the Han dynasty, dyes washed in the Liujiang River, which flows south of Chengdu in Shu, were considered to be particularly vivid and beautiful, and the city came to be called Jincheng and the river Jinjiang. During the Three Kingdoms period, the region developed to such an extent that it overwhelmed the brocade weaving of Xiangyi, which was the most famous brocade production area at the time, and has maintained an important position as a silk weaving area for successive dynasties since then. …
