Legnica (English spelling)
A city in Lower Silesian Voivodeship in southwestern Poland. It is located on the Kaczala River in the fertile Silesian lowlands, about 60 km west of Wrocław. In the Middle Ages, it was a strategic location on the western trade route connecting Eastern and Western Europe. In 1248, it was the capital of the Principality of Legnica, one of the principalities descended from the Piast dynasty. It obtained city rights in 1252. In 1675, it passed to the Habsburgs, and in 1741 it became part of Prussia. It has been part of Poland since 1945. It has a long history of industry, with a tradition of linen weaving dating back to the 15th century and wall hangings manufacturing dating back to the 16th century. In modern times, it has been the administrative and economic center of the copper mining region. Its industries include copper smelting, non-ferrous metals, sewing, food processing, beer brewing, and piano manufacturing. Medieval buildings remain, including the Piast family tomb. Population: 107,100 (2002).

ポーランド南西部,ドルノシロンスキェ県の都市。ドイツ語ではリーグニッツ Liegnitz。ウロツワフ西方約 60km,豊穣なシロンスク (シュレジエン ) 低地のカチャワ川沿岸に位置する。中世には東西ヨーロッパをつなぐ交易路の西の要地であった。 1248年にピアスト朝の系譜をひく諸侯国の一つ,レグニツァ公国の首都。 1252年都市権獲得。 1675年ハプスブルク家に渡り,1741年プロシア領になる。 1945年以後ポーランド領。工業の歴史は古く,15世紀から麻織,16世紀から壁掛製造の伝統をもつ。近代以降は銅鉱山地帯の行政・経済中心地。銅の製錬,非鉄金属工業,縫製,食品加工,ビール醸造,ピアノ製造などの工業がある。ピアスト家の墓所をはじめ中世の建物が残る。人口 10万 7100 (2002) 。
