Japanese: スケートボード - すけーとぼーど（英語表記）skateboard

A 70-110cm long board with two wheels on each side. It also refers to the sport or play in which people ride on this board and glide or jump. There are shortboards and longboards, which have different lengths, and in recent years, electric skateboards that use a motor to rotate the wheels have also appeared. In Japan, it is abbreviated to "skateboard." Players are called skateboarders or skaters. It is sometimes collectively called "side-riding" or "side-riding style" along with surfing and snowboarding, which have a similar riding style in which the body is turned sideways relative to the board. Although there are no restrictions on skateboarding under Japan's Road Traffic Act, it is interpreted as "roller skating or similar activities," and there are restrictions on its use on public roads and transportation.

history

Skateboarding is said to have started in the United States in the 1940s. At first, it was a toy with a wooden board and iron wheels. Later, it was developed to move in a certain direction by shifting the center of gravity and maintaining balance like surfing, and to be enjoyed on land. From the 1960s to the 1970s, improvements were made to the materials of the wheels and parts such as bearings, which improved the gliding performance and durability, and it became accepted by a wide range of users. Around this time, it became popular among surfers and children in Japan, and in the late 1960s, national competitions began to be held. In the mid-1970s, skateparks, facilities dedicated to skateboarding, equipped with obstacles similar to handrails and stairs in public places, as well as structures such as half pipes, were built all over the country. Meanwhile, as the number of users increased, skateboarding in public places became prohibited, but difficult techniques and unique expressions called tricks were developed using specialized facilities such as skateparks. Safety also became a consideration, and it was around this time that the wearing of bicycle helmets and protective gear became commonplace. In Japan, the All Japan Skateboarding Association (AJSA, renamed the Japan Skateboarding Association in 2004 and the World Skate Japan Association in September 2019) was established in 1982, and domestic competitions and a professional certification system were established.

As for international competitions, the World Cup Skateboarding was launched in 1994, and the following year, in 1995, the X Games, a sporting event centered on skateboarding, began in the United States. In 2010, the Street League was launched as a world tour for professional skaters, and has since developed into a competition that attracts the most world-famous skaters.

Through these international competitions, professional skaters who have gained worldwide popularity have appeared one after another, and their activities have come to strongly influence subcultures and street fashion. It is said that there are now 50 million enthusiasts in 80 countries and regions, and it has become established as an urban sport, from professional sports to those enjoyed as a family sport. As of September 2016, there are approximately 250,000 enthusiasts in Japan, and about 1,000 people are registered competitors.

Sports and Events

There are four main types of skateboarding:

(1) Street: A judged competition in which participants perform tricks using obstacles such as slopes, handrails, and steps found in a typical town. The tricks are evaluated based on their level of completion and difficulty.

(2) Park A judged competition in which competitors perform gliding, jumping, and special tricks in a complex structure called a combination pool (commonly known as a mega pool), which is made up of a bowl-shaped structure called a bowl and a complex wall, taking advantage of the shape of the structure. The competitors are evaluated on the level of completion and difficulty of their tricks.

(3) Vertical: A general term for judged competitions in which competitors perform difficult tricks in succession within a set time on U-shaped or bowl-shaped courses, such as the half-pipe used in snowboarding. Vertical means vertical in English.

(4) Freestyle: A judged competition in which competitors compete on a flat arena known as flatland, by spinning, flipping, and balancing their skateboards vertically or horizontally, all while moving to music of their own choosing.

In addition to these four events, there are other events such as slalom, in which skiers and snowboarders weave between gates, and downhill, in which skiers compete over the time and speed to reach the finish line on a long downhill slope, and these are very popular overseas.

Tools

Skateboards are generally made of maple wood plywood called a deck, which is 70-110 cm long and 18-27 cm wide, and is processed by bending, coating, and coloring. On the underside, there are wheels made of polyurethane or hard plastic, two at the front and two at the back. The front and back of the deck are curved upward, with the front called the nose and the rear called the tail. The wheels on the underside are attached to a base and axle called a truck, which moves flexibly with the wheels and provides cushioning, allowing the deck to tilt freely by shifting the center of gravity and adjust the direction of travel. The nose tip and tail surface on the underside are protected because they rub against the ground when slowing down or stopping, like braking.

Subsequent developments

Skateboarding was included for the first time in the 2020 (Reiwa 2) Tokyo Olympic Games (to be held in 2021) as one of the 18 events in five additional sports proposed by the host city. The events included four men's and women's street and park events, and were held at Ariake Urban Sports Park in Odaiba, Tokyo (Koto Ward). In the men's street event, Yuto Horigome (1999- ) won the gold medal, in the women's street event, Momiji Nishiya (2007- ) won the gold medal, and Funa Nakayama (2005- ) won the bronze medal, and in the women's park event, Sakura Yosozumi (2002- ) won the gold medal and Kokona Hiraki (2008- ) won the silver medal. The domestic governing body for the Tokyo Olympic Games was World Skate Japan, a general incorporated association.

70～110センチメートルの縦長の厚板に、前後それぞれ二つの車輪をつけて人が乗る運動用具。また、このボードに乗り、滑走や跳躍などをする競技や遊びのことをいう。板の長さが異なるショートボードとロングボードがあり、近年はモーターで車輪を回転させる電動スケートボードも登場している。日本ではスケボーと略される。プレーヤーのことを、スケートボーダーやスケーターとよぶ。ボードに対して体を横向きにする乗り方が似ているサーフィンやスノーボードとあわせ、「横乗り」や「横乗り系」と総称することがある。なお、日本の道路交通法上では、スケートボードに対する制限は規定されていないものの、「ローラースケートをし、またはこれらに類する行為」に当てはまると解釈され、公道での利用や輸送行為は制限されている。

歴史

スケートボードは、1940年代にアメリカで始められたという。当初は木の板に鉄製の戸車をつけた遊具であった。その後、サーフィンのように重心移動やバランスのとり方で、一定方向に進ませる操作方法や、陸上で楽しめるようなくふうがなされた。1960～1970年代にかけ、車輪の材質やベアリングなどのパーツの改良によって、滑走性能や耐久性の向上が図られたことから、幅広いユーザーに受け入れられるようになった。このころには、日本でもサーファーや子供の間で流行し、1960年代後半には、全国規模の大会が開かれるようになった。また、1970年代なかばになると、公共の場に整備されている手すりや階段などと同じような障害物や、ハーフパイプなどの構造物が設けられたスケートボード専用施設、スケートパークが全国各地につくられた。一方、ユーザーの増加に伴い、公共の場においてスケートボードをすることは禁じられるようになっていくが、スケートパークなどの専用施設を利用し、トリックとよばれるむずかしい技術や個性的な表現が発展をみせる。また、安全面も考慮されるようになり、自転車用ヘルメットやプロテクターの装着が定着したのはこのころである。日本では1982年（昭和57）に全日本スケートボード協会（AJSA。2004年以降、一般社団法人日本スケートボード協会、2019年9月に一般社団法人ワールドスケートジャパンに改称）が設立され、国内大会やプロ認定制度などが形づくられた。

　国際大会としては、1994年にワールドカップ・スケートボーディングが開始され、翌1995年、スケートボードを中心とするスポーツイベントのX(エックス)ゲームスが、アメリカで始まった。また、2010年にはプロ選手のワールドツアーとしてストリートリーグが始まり、世界的に有名な選手がもっとも集まる大会に発展した。

　このような国際大会を通し、世界的に人気を得るプロスケーターが次々に登場し、その活動は、サブカルチャーやストリートファッションに強く影響するようになった。いまや80の国と地域で5000万人の愛好者がいるといわれ、プロスポーツからファミリースポーツとして楽しむ人まで、都市型スポーツとして定着している。2016年（平成28）9月時点で、日本国内の愛好者はおよそ25万人、競技登録者は約1000人である。

競技と種目

スケートボードのおもな競技は、以下の4種類である。

(1)ストリート　一般的な町にある斜面や手すり、段差などの障害物を設けたセクションのある競技場で、障害などを利用してトリック（技）を行い、その完成度や難度が評価される採点競技。

(2)パーク　ボウルとよばれるお椀(わん)状の構造物や、ウォール（壁）などを組み合わせた複雑な構造のコンビプール（通称メガプール）という競技場で、その形状を生かしながら滑走や跳躍、特殊なトリックなどを行い、その完成度や難易度が評価される採点競技。

(3)バーチカル　スノーボード競技で使われるハーフパイプのように、U字型やお椀状などのコースを使って難度の高いトリックを一定時間内に連続で行う採点競技の総称。バーチカルは英語で垂直の意味。

(4)フリースタイル　フラットランドとよばれる平坦(へいたん)な競技場で、スケートボードだけを回転させたり、裏返したり、縦や横に垂直に立ててバランスをとったりして、自分で選曲した音楽にあわせながら、スケートボードを自在に操る技術を競う採点競技。

　これら4種目のほか、スキーやスノーボードのように旗門の間を縫って進むスラローム、長い下り坂を利用し、ゴールまでの到達時間や速度を競うダウンヒルがあり、海外では高い人気がある。

用具

スケートボードは、一般的に長さ70～110センチメートル、幅18～27センチメートルのデッキとよばれるメープルウッド（カエデ材）の合板に、曲げやコーティング、彩色などの加工が施されている。下面には、ホイールというポリウレタンや硬質プラスチックでつくられた車輪が、前後に二つずつつけられている。デッキの前後は上方に反り上がっており、前方をノーズnose（鼻）、後方をテールtail（尾）とよぶ。下面の車輪は、トラックという台座と車軸に取り付けられており、このトラックがホイールとともに柔らかく動き、クッション性をもたらすことで、重心移動によってデッキを自在に傾斜させ、進行方向を調整できる仕組みになっている。下面のノーズ先端やテール面はブレーキのように、減速や停止時に地面に擦りつけられるので、ガードが施されている。

その後の動き

2020年（令和2）のオリンピック・東京大会（2021年開催）では、開催都市が実施を提案する追加種目5競技18種目の1競技として、スケートボードが初めて採用された。種目はストリートとパークの男女4種目で、東京・お台場（江東(こうとう)区）の有明(ありあけ)アーバンスポーツパークで開催された。男子ストリートでは堀米雄斗(ほりごめゆうと)（1999―　）が金メダル、女子ストリートでは西矢椛(にしやもみじ)（2007―　）が金メダル、中山楓奈(なかやまふうな)（2005―　）が銅メダル、女子パークでは四十住(よそずみ)さくら（2002―　）が金メダル、開心那(ひらきここな)（2008―　）が銀メダルを獲得した。なお、オリンピック・東京大会における国内の統括団体は、一般社団法人ワールドスケートジャパンであった。
