British poet. One of the fin de siècle poets. When he was young, he suffered the misfortune of his parents committing suicide one after the other. He himself was sickly, pale and sensitive. He dropped out of Oxford University, went to France, and after returning to England, he associated with the poets of the Rhymer's Club, who were influenced by Pater, and contributed to magazines such as The Yellow Book and Savoy. He later converted to Catholicism. His works include the novel The Comedy of Masks (1893) and the collection of short stories The Dilemmas (1895), but his masterpiece, Anthology of Poems (1896), is a highly crystallized lyric poem addressing the eternal woman "Cynara." He died on February 23, 1900.
