A ceremonial band employed in the royal courts of the medieval Islamic world. Also called a nawba, it was a kind of military band that performed outdoor ensembles of loud percussion instruments such as the naqqara, tabl (big drum), surnay, and nafil, as well as wind instruments. They played from the roofs of castle gates to announce the times for Muslim prayer, to signal the arrival of nobles, and to lead the sultan's procession. Moreover, they also fulfilled a symbolic function of making the ruler's dignity and sovereignty known throughout his domain. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
