Achiel van Acker

1898‐1975
Belgian politician. Born in Bruges, he was a labor union leader, and in 1927 became a member of the National Assembly for the Belgian Labor Party (renamed the Belgian Socialist Party in 1945). As Minister of Labor and Social Welfare in the Pierlot government, which was formed immediately after the liberation in September 1944, he enacted the Social Security Act. In February 1945, he formed the first national Van Acker government, but resigned due to internal conflict with the Christian Social Party over the "King Question" (the King's war responsibility). He formed a second cabinet in August of the same year, but the political situation was shaken by the "King Question," and he resigned en masse in February 1946. The third left-wing coalition government, which was formed in March, also ended up being short-lived, lasting only six months.

ベルギーの政治家。ブリュージュに生まれ，はじめ労働組合の指導者，1927年ベルギー労働党(1945年ベルギー社会党と改称)の下院議員となる。44年9月解放直後成立したピエルロPierlot内閣の労働･社会福祉大臣として社会保障法を成立させた。45年2月第1次ファン･アッケル挙国内閣を組織したが，〈国王問題〉(国王の戦争責任問題)をめぐる閣内対立でキリスト教社会党と対立して辞職。同年8月第2次内閣を組織したが，政局は〈国王問題〉で揺れ，46年2月総辞職，3月成立させた左派連立政権(第3次)も6ヵ月の短命に終わった。
