Schoffengericht (English spelling)

...A system in which several lay judges (part-time, non-legal) selected from the general public by drawing lots or other methods form a panel of judges together with a full-time, professional judge to adjudicate cases. This system developed mainly in Germany, and the Schöffengericht, a lay judge court in Germany's criminal proceedings, is a typical example. Like the jury system developed mainly in the UK and the US, this system is one in which ordinary citizens who are not legal experts are involved in trials.
