Harutaka Ooka - Ooka Shumpoku

A painter from the mid-Edo period in Osaka. His given names were Aiyoku and Aito. His other names included Suzushika and Suisho. He taught himself the Kano school and Ming and Qing painting, and was active mainly in Kyoto under the patronage of the head priest Shoo of Daikakuji Temple. In 1735 (Kyoho 20), he attained the rank of Hokan, and became a priest at Daikakuji Temple. His works include the sliding screen paintings at Reiun-in Temple in Myoshinji Temple, but he is better known as a painter of gahon (models for painting), and his works such as Mingcho Shiken (Purple Inkstone of the Ming Dynasty, published in 1746, an early colored woodblock print adapted from the Chinese painting manual Jieziyuan Huaduan), Gahon Tekan (Guahon Handbook), and Gakou Senran (Gakou Suidan), greatly inspired aspiring painters at the time.

江戸中期の画家。大坂の人。名は愛翼,愛董。別号は雀叱,翠松など。独学で狩野派や明清画を学び,大覚寺性応門主の庇護を受け,京都を中心に活躍。享保20(1735)年には法眼位を得,大覚寺の坊官となった。作例に妙心寺霊雲院の障壁画があるが,むしろ画本(絵を描くときの手本)作家として知られ,その著『明朝紫硯』(1746年刊,中国の画譜『芥子園画伝』を翻案した初期の色摺版画),『画本手鑑』『画巧潜覧』などは,当時,画に志す人々を大いに刺激した。
