Year of death: Gentoyo 4th October 6th (1081.11.9) Year of birth: Kanko 8 (1011) A monk who went to Song China in the mid-Heian period. He played a major role in cultural exchange between Japan and Song China, and is famous for writing Santendai Godaisanki, which chronicles his time in Song China from beginning to end. He was the son of Fujiwara no Sadamori. His mother is said to be the daughter of Minamoto no Toshikata, and is widely known for the collection of Jojin Ajari Boshu. At the age of seven, he entered the chambers of Bunkei at Daiun-ji Temple in Iwakura, Kyoto. Bunkei was the first inspector of the temple, and a famous monk who was appointed as the guardian monk of Emperor Sanjo and the abbot of Mii-dera Temple. Jojin succeeded him and became the head priest of Daiun-ji Temple at the age of 31 in 1041, a position he held for the next 31 years. During this time, he learned the secret techniques of esoteric Buddhism, such as the great teachings of Taizo, Kongo, and Sosiddhi, as well as the secret goma ritual, from his masters Bunkei, Goen, and Gyoen. He also became well-versed in the essential principles of the Lotus Sutra, served at the Eight Lotus Sutra Lectures at the Imperial Court, was appointed an ajari at Enryaku-ji Temple, and served as the guardian monk of Fujiwara no Yorimichi for 20 years. His career seemed to be full of success. However, from an early age, he had a strong desire to travel to Song China and make a pilgrimage to Mount Tendai, the land where the 500 Arhats reside, and Mount Godai, the mountain where Manjusri appears. In 1060, he prayed to Shinra Myojin Shrine in Mitsui (the guardian deity of Onjoji Temple in Otsu City) to allow him to cross the sea, and in 1070, he submitted a petition to the Imperial Court requesting permission to travel to Song China. In March 1072, he set sail from Kabeshima, Matsuura County, Hizen Province (Kabeshima, Yobuko Town, Higashi Matsuura County, Saga Prefecture). The circumstances surrounding this are detailed in the aforementioned "Moshu." After traveling to Song China, he made a pilgrimage to both mountains, was granted an audience with Emperor Shenzong, and performed a secret ritual to pray for rain, for which he was given the title of Zen'e Daishi, but he never returned to Japan and passed away there at the age of 71. <References> Hirabayashi Fumio, "A Study and Annotation of the Record of Tendai Godaisan" (Ohara Jin) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
