American chemical engineer and pioneer of the electrolysis industry. Born in New York, he studied at Columbia University, but dropped out to open a laboratory in New York City and research the manufacturing process of aluminum. In 1886 he traveled to England, where he researched the industrial manufacturing of sodium and potassium, and succeeded in industrializing the manufacture of aluminum using sodium.
