American chemical engineer and pioneer of the electrolysis industry. Born in New York, he studied at Columbia University, but dropped out to open a laboratory in New York City and research the manufacturing process of aluminum. In 1886 he traveled to England, where he researched the industrial manufacturing of sodium and potassium, and succeeded in industrializing the manufacture of aluminum using sodium. In 1890 he obtained a patent for the manufacturing process of sodium by electrolysis of salt water.

米国の化学技術者で電解工業の先駆者。ニューヨークに生まれ，コロンビア大学に学ぶが，中退してニューヨーク市で研究室を開設，アルミニウムの製法を探求する。1886年渡英し，ナトリウム，カリウムの工業的製法を研究し，ナトリウムを用いたアルミニウム製造の工業化に成功。1890年食塩水の電解によるナトリウムの製法特許を得た。
