An island in northwestern Russia where the folds of the Ural Mountains are thought to have reappeared in the Arctic Ocean. It stretches from north-northeast to south-southwest, dividing the Arctic Ocean into the Kara Sea (east) and the Barents Sea (west). To the south, it connects to the Eurasian mainland via Vaigach Island, via a strait about 45 km wide called Karskie Vorota (Karara Sea Gate). It is about 1,000 km long, 40-110 km wide, and has an area of about 83,000 km2 . Excluding many small islands, it is divided into two islands, north and south, and is separated by the 2-3 km wide Matochkin-Shal Strait.
