《Gizankoukaku》

...In the Edo period, a new trend arose of telling each other folk ghost stories, and Hyaku Monogatari, Otogi Hanashi, and Shokoku Hanashi were widely enjoyed by everyone from the samurai class to the common people. People believed in the obsession of people and animals, and in the curse of things. As a literary phenomenon, there were collections of early modern folk ghost stories such as Gizane Kokaku (1596) and Ogita Ansei's Otogi Monogatari, and this trend continued for a long time as Hyaku Monogatari series were published. Furthermore, amid a boom in the introduction of Chinese ghost stories as topical material, such as in "Collection of Strange Tales" (1687) and "Complete Collection of Ghost Stories" (1698), Asai Ryōi wrote "Otogiboko" (1666) based on "New Tales of Jiandeng," opening up a new literary realm; from this lineage came Tsuga Teishō, Ueda Akinari, Itami Chinen and other intellectual authors who wrote fantasy and supernatural stories as critiques of reality.
