A province in eastern Canada. Area 55,490 km2 , population 937,800 (1995). Capital city is Halifax. The population is 75% British and 11% French, which is quite different from the neighboring province of New Brunswick. Protruding into the Atlantic Ocean, Nova Scotia played a major role in the triangular trade between Britain, Nova Scotia, and the West Indies in the first half of the 19th century, and enjoyed prosperity.
