Martin Gustav Nottebohm
1817‐82
German musicologist. He studied piano and theory in Berlin, and from 1840 onwards at the Leipzig Conservatory under Mendelssohn and Schumann. In 1846 he moved to Vienna to become a teacher of piano and theory, and became friends with Brahms. He was in charge of collecting materials for the publication of the complete works of Beethoven by Breitkopf (1862-65), the results of which were published as the Catalogue of Beethoven's Works (1868). His greatest achievement was his systematic research into Beethoven's complex sketches, which contributed greatly to determining the dates of the compositions.
