An annual aquatic plant of the Pontederiaceae family (APG classification: Pontederiaceae). It has several basal leaves, and the leaf blade is lanceolate or ovate-cordate, 3-7 cm long, 1.5-3 cm wide, and has a long stalk. The stem is much shorter than the basal leaves, and bears one leaf and 3-7 flowers. The flowers bloom in September and October, are bluish-purple, 1.5-2 cm in diameter. It grows in rice paddies and ponds, and is native to various parts of Japan, and is widely distributed in East Asia and Southeast Asia. The stems and leaves are edible.
