Born: June 30, 1856
A foreign employee who came to Japan during the Meiji period. A British physicist. Born in Scotland. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, he served as an assistant in the physics department. On the recommendation of Professor Thomson (Lord Kelvin) of the University of Glasgow, he came to Japan in 1883 (Meiji 16) and became a physics teacher at the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Science, and continued to teach at the Imperial University's Faculty of Science, where he remained until 1891. During that time, he lectured on advanced electricity, acoustics, magnetic dynamics, and other subjects, and was involved in magnetic surveys throughout Japan. He also conducted research on seismology with Milne and Ewing. After returning to Japan in 1891, he served as a professor at the University of Edinburgh and Secretary General of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

明治期に来日したお雇い外国人。イギリス人物理学者。スコットランド生まれ。エジンバラ大学を卒業後物理学教室の助手を務めた。グラスゴー大学のトムソン教授(ケルビン卿)の推薦で明治16(1883)年に来日して東大理学部の物理学の教師となり,引き続き帝大理科大学で教え,24年まで在職。その間,高等電気,音響学,磁気力学などを講義し,日本全土の磁気測量にも従事した。またミルンやユーイングらと共に地震学の研究も行った。24年に帰国後はエジンバラ大学教授,エジンバラ王立協会書記長などを務めた。
