A branch of the Saionji family, the Kan'in branch of the northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. The family rank was Seika. The family business was biwa. Usually, the founder was Kanesue, the fourth son of Saionji Sanekane, who was the Daijo-daijin (Minister of State) and Junior First Rank. However, in the Sanekane Oki-bun (included in the Kankenki) of 1317 (Bunpo 1), it is stated that Kanesue was the legitimate son of his elder brother Kimiaki, and Kimiaki's son Kimiaki was the son of Kanesue, and the two branches of Kimiaki and Kanesue should be abbreviated to one branch, so should Kimiaki be the founder? However, Kimiaki died before Kanesue, and his son Kimifuyu served in the Southern Court, so Kanesue's descendants inherited the family, which is why Kanesue was named the founder.
