A Neolithic to Bronze Age ruins in Ras Shamra, about 10 km north of Latakia in northern Syria. According to Egyptian and Hittite records from around 2000 BC, it was an ancient Canaanite city. At the time, it was the center of maritime trade, but around 1200 BC, it was seized by the maritime peoples of the Aegean Sea. The ruins were discovered in 1929 and have since been excavated by C. Schaefer and others. In particular, in the second layer (Late Bronze Age, 16th to 14th centuries BC), numerous gold, bronze and ivory products, especially clay tablets with alphabets written in cuneiform, have been discovered along with the remains of palaces and temples, which have greatly contributed to elucidating the relationship between Syria and Egypt, Hittite, Mesopotamia, Aegean, etc. at that time.
