Founded in 1876 as Japan's first private bank. Its predecessor was the Mitsui Exchange Shop, founded in 1683, which served as the shogunate's official foreign exchange supplier and, for a time after the Meiji Restoration, also carried out the duties of the new government's central bank. It developed as a central financial institution for the Mitsui zaibatsu, and was reorganized as a joint-stock company in 1909. In 1943 it merged with Daiichi Bank to establish Teikoku Bank, Japan's largest bank, and in 1944 it merged with Jugo Bank. In 1948 it separated from Daiichi Bank and was renamed Mitsui Bank in 1954. In 1990 it merged with Taiyo Kobe Bank to become Taiyo Kobe Mitsui Bank, and in 1992 it was renamed Sakura Bank. It further merged with Sumitomo Bank in 2001 to become Sumitomo Mitsui Bank. → Related topics Ikeda Seihin | Kobe Bank [Stock] | Taiyo Bank [Stock] | Teigin Incident | Fujiyama Raita Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
