This is the former town area in the north-central part of Takashima City, in the northwest of Shiga Prefecture. It is located in the Ishida River basin. It was incorporated as a town in 1906. In 1955, it merged with Kawakami Village and Mitani Village. In 2005, it merged with Makino Town, Kutsuki Village, Azumigawa Town, Takashima Town, and Shinasahi Town to form Takashima City. Imazu, the central area, has developed since the end of the Muromachi period as the intersection of the Wakasa Kaido (current Route 303) and the Nishi Omi Road (current Route 161), and as a key port for water transportation on Lake Biwa. Sweetfish fishing is also carried out here. It is the administrative and educational center of the Kosai region, and the base for tourism on Chikubushima Island. The Self-Defense Forces are stationed in Aiba-no in the south. Rice is the main crop, and fruit is cultivated in the mountainous areas. The alluvial plains in the lower reaches are a producer of early-season rice. The northern area and the lakeshore area belong to Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park.
