Bregmaceros japonicus

Japanese: サイウオ（英語表記）Bregmaceros japonicus

A marine fish of the family Cordiformes and family Cynodontidae. It is found from central Honshu southwards, but is particularly common in Toyama Bay, where it is known locally as Shumokuuo. Its body is long and slender, with a rounded snout. Its body colour is purple-brown. The first dorsal fin is located at the back of the head and consists of a single slender fin ray. The second dorsal fin and anal fin both have long bases and are similarly shaped and opposite each other dorsally and ventrally. The pelvic fin is unusually long at the throat. It is approximately 8cm long. It lives near the coast, floating at night and gathering around light. In the Toyama region, it is eaten as dried fish.

タラ目サイウオ科の海産魚。本州中部以南に分布するが，富山湾にとくに多く，同地方の地方名はシュモクウオという。体は細長く，吻端（ふんたん）は丸い。体色は紫褐色。第1背びれは後頭部にあり1本の細長い鰭条（きじよう）だけからなる。第2背びれとしりびれとはいずれも基底が長く，背腹に相似形で対在する。腹びれは喉位（こうい）で異常に長い。全長およそ8cm。海岸近くにすみ，夜間浮いて光に集まる。富山地方では干物として食用に供される。
