This stone monument was made in 689 (the 3rd year of the reign of Empress Jito) to mark the grave of Uneme Takeyoshi. It was originally excavated from Katabirayama in Kasugamura, Kawachi Province (present-day Taishi-cho, Minamikawachi-gun, Osaka Prefecture) and is said to have been placed at the nearby Myoken-ji Temple, but its location has now been lost. According to a rubbing from the Edo period, the stone was about 38 cm high and 21 cm wide, and six lines of text were engraved on its entire surface. The text states that Uneme Takeyoshi, who was a high official at the Asuka Kiyomihara Daichotei (the Imperial Court Garden of Asuka) and held the rank of Chodai-ni, had requested the land on Kataurayama for 4,000 generations as the gravesite, and that it should not be destroyed or defaced by others. The date December 25, 689, is added at the end. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
