Located in northern Kagoshima Prefecture, this town is a former town in Izumi County, next to the northeast of Akune City, and the northern part of the town faces the Yatsushiro Sea. Rice, mandarin oranges, tobacco, and livestock are cultivated. The area near the border with Izumi City and Takaono Town is a migratory site for cranes (a special natural monument).
