Located in northern Kagoshima Prefecture, this town is a former town in Izumi County, next to the northeast of Akune City, and the northern part of the town faces the Yatsushiro Sea. Rice, mandarin oranges, tobacco, and livestock are cultivated. The area near the border with Izumi City and Takaono Town is a migratory site for cranes (a special natural monument). 鹿児島県北部，出水(いずみ)郡の旧町，阿久根市の北東隣にあり，町域北部は八代(やつしろ)海に臨む。米作，ミカン，タバコ栽培，畜産を行う。出水市，高尾野町との境界付近はツルの渡来地（特別天然記念物）である。2006年３月出水郡高尾野町と出水市へ編入。30.60km2。4965人（2003）。
