A city in the northwestern tip of Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. It occupies flat land between the Tone River and the Edo River. The city center has been a river port on the Edo River since early modern times, and developed as a producer of dark soy sauce, which was shipped all over the country. Even today, it produces about 30% of the soy sauce in the country. Since the 1960s, an industrial complex has been developed in the southern part of the city, and machinery and chemical industries have moved in. Vegetables and tobacco are produced in the surrounding area. It is connected to Ibaraki Prefecture by the Tobu Railway and Mebuki Ohashi Bridge and Sakai Ohashi Bridge. Shimizu Park, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, is located here. In June 2003, it merged with Sekijuku Town in Higashikatsushika County.
