Sancai pottery from the late Ming Dynasty, fired in southern China. Although it is Chinese, it is called Kochi (an old regional name for southern Vietnam) because Japan often reimported wares that were exported to this area. Kochi ware is clearly descended from Chinese Ming dynasty ceramics in both technique and style. There are two types: soft ceramic base and hard semi-porcelain base. Semi-porcelain base Kochi ware is in the same line as the Houka (Fo-ka) wares of the Jingdezhen kilns, and is thought to be a product of a kiln affiliated with this kiln. The Kochi ware incense holders, which are particularly popular among Japanese tea masters, are typical of the latter type. In Japan, kilns around the country fired sancai ware following the example of Kochi ware in the late Edo period, and the sancai glaze is called Kochi glaze.
