Cotton red fang moth - Pectinophora gossypiella

Cotton red fang moth - Pectinophora gossypiella
An insect of the Lepidoptera family Gelechiidae. Wingspan is about 1.5cm. The wings are long and slender, with the outer edge of the forewings inclined and the tip of the hindwings slightly pointed. The forewings are reddish brown with irregular dark markings. It is believed to have originated in India, but has spread to cotton-growing areas around the world and become a major pest. The larvae, also known as pink cotton bugs, cause great damage by feeding on the seeds in cotton buds, flowers, and capsules. Under good conditions, one generation is completed in one month, but under adverse conditions such as low temperature, dryness, and lack of food, the larvae go into hibernation.
