Turkana [Lake] - Turkana

A lake in the northern part of Kenya, in the Great Rift Valley of Africa. Formerly known as Lake Rudolf. It is a long and narrow lake measuring 250km north to south and 56km wide at its widest point from east to west, with ^an area of 8,660km2. The lake surface is 427m above sea level and 73m deep. The Kibish, Omo and Turkwel rivers flow into the lake, but there is no drainage river and it is saline. The Turkana people, a pastoral people, live in the surrounding area. Fish are abundant, and crocodiles and hippos live there. Ape-man bones and stone tools have been excavated from the eastern and northern shores. Sibiloi National Park on the eastern shore and the lake's central island are rich in biodiversity and were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1997.
