〘 noun 〙 A wholesaler who buys rice from producers and sells it to retailers. Komedonya. ※Kanazoshi Ukiyo Monogatari (around 1665) 2 “A certain rice wholesaler (komedohiya no kado ni tachi nari) ” [Etymology] (1) In early modern Osaka, rice trading was centered on stored rice, and the storehouses were in a sense in the position of wholesalers, while brokers were in opposition to them. The term “rice wholesaler” was used to refer to a part of these brokers. (2) In Edo, those who bought rice from Kamigata-suji were called "honmai-tonya" or "kome-tonya" (rice wholesalers), and were distinguished from "ji-mawari-oku-tonya" (rice wholesalers who bought rice from the local area or the inner areas). There were other places called "kome-tonya" (rice wholesalers), and even after the Meiji period, those who sold rice wholesale were generally called "kome-tonya" (rice wholesalers).
