A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Shiba clan. Her other name was Chikyo. She was the daughter of a priest in Ise Yamada (Mie Prefecture). She married Shiba Kazuari, a haiku poet and doctor from the same area. Influenced by her husband, she learned haiku, became a disciple of Basho in 1688 (Genroku 1), and moved to Osaka with her husband in 1692. In 1694, she invited Basho and performed a nine-verse kasen performance based on the old man's hokku, "There is not even a speck of dust standing in the eyes of the white chrysanthemum." In Osaka, she was friends with Saikaku and others, and worked as a haiku and zappai poet in addition to her medical practice, but in 1703 (Genroku 16), after her husband died, she moved to Edo and opened an ophthalmology practice while associating with Kikaku and other members of the Edo theater scene. However, in her later years, she seems to have devoted herself to waka poetry. Her works include "Kiku no dust" (1706?) and "Tsuru no tsue" (1723).
