It literally means the scientific method of management, but in particular it refers to mathematical methods such as operations research (OR), which was developed mainly in the United States after World War II out of the need to formulate strategies scientifically. More precisely, it refers to mathematical and statistical methods to make corporate decision-making more rational. It has since become even broader in content, embracing information theory and computer science, as well as the simulation methods and systems analysis that have developed along with them.
