Management science

Japanese: マネジメント･サイエンス（英語表記）management science

It literally means the scientific method of management, but in particular it refers to mathematical methods such as operations research (OR), which was developed mainly in the United States after World War II out of the need to formulate strategies scientifically. More precisely, it refers to mathematical and statistical methods to make corporate decision-making more rational. It has since become even broader in content, embracing information theory and computer science, as well as the simulation methods and systems analysis that have developed along with them.

文字どおり経営の科学的手法を意味するが，なかでも第2次大戦を契機として，主としてアメリカで科学的に戦略を立てる必要から開発されたオペレーションズリサーチ(OR)などの数理的手法を意味する。より正確には，企業の意思決定をより合理的にするための，数学的･統計学的手法を指す。その後，情報理論やコンピューター･サイエンス，またそれに伴って発展したシミュレーション法やシステム分析などを包含して，さらに広範な内容をもつものとなってきている。
