Japanese: 婉曲語法 - えんきょくごほう（英語表記）euphemism

To avoid using direct expressions and to use roundabout expressions so as not to offend the ear. One example is "developing countries" instead of "underdeveloped countries." The Victorian era in England is famous for having many expressions of this kind, for example, "pregnant" was used as "being in an interesting condition." If euphemisms become customary, they become indistinguishable from direct expressions, and as a result, new euphemisms are born. This is also why there are so many synonyms for "toilet."

直接的な表現をせず，耳ざわりにならないように遠回しにいうこと。「後進国」というかわりに「開発途上国」というのがその一例。イギリスのビクトリア朝時代はこの種の表現が多いことで有名で，たとえば，「妊娠している」 pregnantを「おもしろい状態にある」 being in an interesting conditionといった。婉曲な表現も慣習化すれば直接的表現と変らなくなり，その結果また新しい婉曲表現が生れる。「便所」をさす同義語が多いのもそのためである。
