A scholar of English literature and a researcher of Noh. He went by the pen name Usukawa. He was born in Oita Prefecture. He graduated from the Department of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University in 1908 (Meiji 41). The following year he became a lecturer at Hosei University, and was promoted to become the university's president in 1946 (Showa 21), and the following year he became president of the university. He studied under Natsume Soseki while attending the former First Higher School. He advanced his research from Greek classical drama to Noh. He trained in the Shimogakari Hosho school under Hosho Shin. In 1938 he traveled to the UK as a professor on a Japan-UK exchange program, and continued to contribute to the introduction of Noh overseas. He has written and edited many books, including "Noh Research and Discovery," "Rebirth of Noh," "The Mystery and Flowers of Noh," "Complete Collection of Yokyoku," and "Complete Book of Noh." Following his will, the Nogami Memorial Noh Research Institute was established at Hosei University after his death. His wife is the writer Nogami Yaeko.
