A large parallelogram-shaped platform measuring 455m on the west side and 290m on the south side was constructed on the natural bedrock of the western slope of Kūh-e Rahmat (meaning "Mountain of Mercy"), partly with cut stone, and on top of which were built the audience hall (apada), the palace of Darius, the palace of Xerxes, the central hall, the hall of a hundred columns, the harem, the treasury, etc. Many craftsmen and laborers were mobilized from all over the empire, including Ionia, Lydia, Syria, Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, Bactria, and Sogdia. …
