Nehemiah

Japanese: ネヘミヤ（英語表記）Nehemiah

A figure in the Old Testament. According to the memoirs in chapters 1-7 and 10-13 of the Book of Nehemiah, he energetically carried out the mission of rebuilding Judaism in the mid-5th century BCE. He was a high-ranking official under the Persian king Artaxerxes, and received permission from the king to stay in Jerusalem. He overcame various obstacles and rebuilt the city walls in 52 days. He also worked to organize and rebuild the Jewish community by purifying the social life of the people, demanding faithfulness to the law regarding the Sabbath and offerings, establishing the duties of priests and Levites, and abolishing mixed marriages. 旧約聖書中の人物。《ネヘミヤ記》1～7章と10～13章の回想録によれば，前5世紀半ばユダヤ教再建の使命を精力的に果たした。ペルシア王アルタクセルクセスの高官で，王からエルサレム滞在の許可を得，種々の妨害を排して52日間で城壁を再建した。また民衆の社会生活を浄化し，安息日，供え物等について律法への忠実を求め，祭司とレビ人の務めを定め，雑婚を排するなど，ユダヤ教共同体の組織化と再建に努めた。【西村俊昭】
