[Born] Around 315 BC. Cilicia, Soloi Died 240/239 BC. Macedonian Greek poet. Representative of the Hellenistic didactic poets. He became acquainted with Callimachus in Athens, and in 276 BC was invited to the court of Antigonus, King of Macedonia, where he celebrated the king's marriage with a hymn. He later visited the court of Antiochus in Syria, but returned to Macedonia in his later years. His main work, the Phainomena, is an epic poem of 1,154 lines that sings about the positions and movements of celestial bodies and omens of the weather. Its literary value is recognized not as a scientific description of celestial phenomena, but as a collection of beautiful star legends. It became famous immediately after its publication, and was translated into Latin by many Romans, including Cicero.
