Shinkei

Japanese:
Shinkei

A renga master and poet of the mid-Muromachi period. Gon no Daisozu. Also called Renkaihoshi. Formerly known as Shinkei. Born in Taisho, Nagusa County, Kii Province (Wakayama City), he went to Kyoto at the age of three to become a monk. He trained at Yokokawa on Mount Hiei, and entered Jujushin-in at the foot of Mount Otowa in Kyoto. It is unclear who his renga teacher was, but he studied waka poetry under Shotetsu, and was intent on implementing his teachings in his renga. His style was different from that of other renga poets of the time, and although he had participated in the Kitano Banku in 1433 (Eikyō 5) as early as before the Onin period, there are fewer surviving works by him as a group than those of Sozei, Senjyun, and others, and he was rather considered a side stream. In April 67 (Onin 1), he went down to Ise, and at the invitation of Suzuki Nagatoshi, he went by sea to Shinagawa in Sagami, and after that, he remained in the Kanto region while aiming to return to Kyoto due to the Onin War, and taught waka and renga to military commanders such as Ota Michizane, and in the summer of 71 (Bunmei 3), he entered Oyama in Sagami, where he died. During his time in the Kanto region, Sogi, who happened to be in the area at the time, visited his hermitage and received his teachings. He highly praised his style, which led to his position as a major figure in the history of renga. His main work is "Sasamegoto," the first volume of which was written in 1463 (Kansho 4) in his hometown of Taisho, and in his subsequent works such as "Hitorigoto," "Ro no Kurigoto," and "Shiyosho," he developed his theory of waka, renga, and Buddhism as one. His works are collected in such works as "Shingyokushu" and "Shibakusa," and he left behind many of his own annotations. He had a sharp sensibility and a well-thought-out style, and the works of his troupe show a very individualistic aspect.
