Kyogyoshinsho - Kyogyoshinsho

Japanese:
Kyogyoshinsho - Kyogyoshinsho

A Buddhist book from the early Kamakura period written by Shinran. There are many theories about its completion, including that it was completed in 1224 (Gannin 1), but if we take the copy made by his disciple Sonren as a rough guide, it is believed to have been completed in 1247 (Hoji 1). The book consists of six volumes: Teaching, Practice, Faith, Verification, The Land of True Buddha, and The Land of Transformation. At the beginning, there is a general preface that discusses the absolute other-power of Amida Buddha, and a preface to the Faith volume that shows the importance of faith. At the end, there is a postscript that touches on the punishment that Shinran received as a disciple of Honen (Genku), the forgiveness that he received from his teacher Honen, and so on. In this book, he first asserts that both the going to the Pure Land and the returning from the Pure Land to this land to give salvation to the people of the world are due to the transfer of the power of the Buddha's original vow. He therefore seeks evidence from sutras and commentaries that teachings, nembutsu, faith, and enlightenment are all due to the transfer of power from the Buddha, and he argues that true faith without doubt is the correct cause of travel to the Pure Land. He then explains the true Buddha and his Pure Land as the fruit of enlightenment, and furthermore, he shows that there is a true and transformed land, and that the Buddha's salvation is found in this land of transformation. This book was written by Shinran and is the essence of Shinran's religion, so it is only natural that it is considered the book that founded the Jodo Shinshu sect.
