Japanese: 大谷寺岩陰遺跡 - おおやじいわかげいせき

This rock shelter site is located within the grounds of Tenkaizan Otani-ji Temple in Otani-cho, Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. The rock shelter, 30m wide, 13m deep, and 12m high, is formed on the tuff cliff face on the left bank of the Sugata River. The group of stone Buddhas carved into the rock face are well known as the Otani Rock-Carved Buddhas. It has long been known that this is a complex archaeological site from the Jomon period, and in 1965, Tatsumi Shiro and others excavated the site in conjunction with disaster prevention work on the rock-carved Buddhas. The artifacts excavated range from the early to late Jomon period, the middle Yayoi period, and the historical period, but the majority of the artifacts are from the early to early early period.

栃木県宇都宮市大谷町の天開山大谷寺境内にある岩陰遺跡。姿川左岸の凝灰岩の崖面に形成された間口30m，奥行き13m，高さ12mの岩陰で，岩壁に彫られた石仏群は〈大谷磨崖仏〉として著名である。縄文時代からの複合遺跡であることは古くから知られており，1965年，磨崖仏の防災工事に伴って辰巳四郎らが発掘調査した。出土した遺物は，縄文時代草創期から晩期，弥生時代中期，歴史時代の各期にわたるが，主体を占めるのは草創期から早期前半にかけての遺物である。
