A book of the Old Testament. Along with the Book of Ezra, it follows the Book of Chronicles. It describes the religious life of the Jews and the reconstruction of Judaism after the return from the Babylonian captivity. Chapters 1-7 describe how Nehemiah, a high official of King Artaxerxes, was saddened by the news of the desolation of Jerusalem, asked the king for permission to rebuild the city walls, arrived in Jerusalem, overcame obstacles and completed the work in 52 days. Chapters 8-9 describe the reading of the Law of Moses and the confession of sins brought by the priest Ezra. Chapters 10-13 describe a list of the people's participation and settlement, the dedication ceremony of the city walls, and the reforms that Nehemiah carried out afterwards.
