This artificial lake is located in Horokanai Town under the jurisdiction of the Kamikawa General Bureau in central Hokkaido. It is also called Lake Uryu. The uppermost reaches of the Uryu River were dammed in the Shumarinai area to create Lake Shumarinai for the Uryu No. 1 Dam and Lake Utsunaiko for the Uryu No. 2 Dam. It was completed in 1943 (Showa 18). With an elevation of 280 meters and a flooded area of 24 square kilometers, it is the largest artificial lake in Hokkaido. The Uryu Power Station, which utilizes this lake, is located in Furen Town to the east and has a maximum output of 51,000 kilowatts and still plays an important role as a large-scale hydroelectric power source. The lake is surrounded by the Hokkaido University Experimental Forest, which still retains much of its original appearance. It is known as a recreational area for camping, fishing, boating, and many people visit by car. It is 25 kilometers from Nayoro City.
