Japanese: 猫騒動物 - ねこそうどうもの

It is a type of puppet theater and a type of Kabuki and Kyogen. Many of them depict the curse of a mysterious cat in a family dispute. An old puppet theater piece, Imagawa Honryo Nekomatayakata, was co-written by Bunkodo, Senzenken, Miyoshi Shoraku, and others and premiered at the Osaka Takemotoza in April 1740 (Genbun 5), and features a mysterious cat in the family dispute of the Imagawa clan. A famous Kabuki piece is Hitori Tabi Gojuyu San Tsugi, written by Tsuruya Nanboku IV and performed at the Edo Kawarazakiza in June 1827 (Bunsei 10). A mysterious cat wearing a twelve-layered kimono licks oil from a lantern.

人形浄瑠璃，歌舞伎狂言の一系統。お家騒動にからめて怪猫のたたりを描くものが多い。古くは1740年(元文5)4月大坂竹本座初演，文耕堂，千前軒，三好松洛ら合作の人形浄瑠璃《今川本領猫魔館（いまがわほんりようねこまたやかた）》があり，今川家のお家騒動に怪猫を配している。歌舞伎では1827年(文政10)6月江戸河原崎座，4世鶴屋南北作《独道中五十三駅（ひとりたびごじゆうさんつぎ）》が有名。十二単衣を着た怪猫が，行灯の油をなめる。
