Around 1844-85 Leader of the Mahdist movement in Sudan and founder of the Mahdist sect. Son of a shipwright from Dunqla (Dongola), said to be of the Sharif family. Declared himself Mahdi on Abba Island in 1881, and rapidly expanded his jihad movement against various powers, including those of Europe, the Ottoman Empire, and Egypt. He defeated Egyptian forces in various places, and in 1885 annihilated the British forces led by General Gordon who came to his rescue in Khartoum, but died of an illness while in the midst of building the Mahdi state.
