A general term for insects in the Hemiptera family, Coccidae. Approximately 60 species are known from Japan. Many species do not form obvious body coverings, and the body skin hardens significantly when they mature, hence the name. However, some species, like waxworms, are covered with a thick layer of glue-like secretions, while others, like cottony scales, have almost no hard skin and form egg sacs with cotton-like secretions when they mature. The bodies vary in shape from nearly circular to elliptical, ranging from flat to spherical with a pronounced protuberance on the back. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
