…The oldest layer, Layer I, is dated to about 3500-2900 BC, and Layer VII to the 3rd-7th century BC. In the center of the tell is an acropolis about 170 meters in diameter, and Palace G, which belongs to Layer IIB1 (about 2400-2250 BC), was excavated there. Approximately 17,000 clay tablets written in Northwest Semitic were excavated, and these "Ebla documents" are gradually shedding light on not only the storage methods in the ancient archives, but also the management system of the city and its political relationship with Mesopotamia. Palace G appears to have been destroyed by King Naram-Sin of Akkad. …

The numerous clay tablets excavated here (the Ebla texts) have sparked debate not only about the history of that time, but also about their connection to the patriarchal legends of the Old Testament. The Amorites' settlement movement, which began around 2000 BCE, first established a powerful kingdom in Aleppo and built a city called Alarakh in the Orontes River basin.
